Fun fun fun little weekend! Three operas in four days in NYC. I’m wiped. From sitting.

Our first opera at the Met was last Thursday’s showing of Donizetti’s Anna Bolena. The whole story centers around Henry VIII getting rid of Anne Boleyn (in exchange for wife #3: Jane Seymour). As a bit of a Tudor history buff, the plot line of the opera is at best aggravatingly historically inaccurate. As somebody who loves the act of watching an opera, I found this performance slightly lacking as it was a bit of a park-and-bark.

However.

However, the music was jaw-dropping. Moreover, the voices were awe-inspiring. Like holy moly. Sondra Radvanovsky played the titular role – her vocal control was unlike anything I had ever heard. And, impressively, Jamie Barton really held her own as Jane Seymour. Just two huge voices for two tragic characters.

Best way to start the weekend!

Other great way to start the weekend? Small munchies at the hotel with friends! Aside from the wonderful operas at the Met, my favorite part of my NYC trips is getting to see all of my NYC buddies. A close third are those New York City bagels. So many layers of love!
